ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book of classic papers and invited reflections is being specially produced to celebrate 50 years of the Journal's publication and the enormous contribution that scholars, cartographers and map-makers have made to the publication in earning its place as the leading international journal of cartography. Founded by the British Cartographic Society (BCS) and first published in June 1964, The Cartographic Journal (TCJ) was the first general-distribution journal of cartography to appear in English. Today, it is an established international journal of record and comment containing authoritative peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of cartography: the science and technology of presenting, communicating and analysing spatial relationships by means of maps and other geographical representations of the Earth's surface. This includes coverage of related and emerging technologies where appropriate, for example, remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS), the Geoweb, global positioning systems and mobile mapping.
