ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Kenneth Field and Damien Demaj's papers under four general headings: the wall; the drawing; the form and function; and the conflict. The act of drawing links mental map to the physical map. Drawing is the glue that holds-together cognitive and constructed images of geography. The design of any efficient product depends upon addressing both Form and Function. Form refers to the appearance and arrangement of visual and functional components. Function refers to the way in which a product operates and the way in which a product serves its purpose. Function is provided via appropriate information design and layout. In electronic map product design, Form should follow Function, meaning that design must support function. Field and Demaj have succinctly identified the conflicts that face contemporary cartographers when undertaking map design and brought them to the fore for a contemporary audience.
