ABSTRACT

The geophysics identified what seemed to be a perimeter or some form of enclosure to the north of the area and, within it, other areas of high resistance (see Chapter 3), and since historical sources identified a parcel of land donated by the Earl of Dunbar for the foundation of Coldstream Priory which included a chapel, in existence by 1165-66, and a graveyard still in use in 1627 (Rogers 1879; Cramp and Douglas-Home 1980; and Chapter 2), this seemed a hopeful explanation for gravestones together with the anomalies revealed on the northern ridge of the field, although other features were noted on the higher ground to the south.
