ABSTRACT

This report details the examination and analysis of 250 fired clay mould fragments and associated copper-alloy fragments from excavations in 1984 at The Hirsel. The material originates from two pits, C898 and C1348, cut through the floor at the western end of the church. Pit 898 was considered to be a bell-casting pit with associated flue and a ledge on which the mouth of the bell mould would have rested. The majority of the mould fragments were excavated from this pit. The second pit, C1348, contained the largest intact piece of mould, from the mouth of the bell, and a quantity of copper-alloy fragments.
