ABSTRACT

Excavations at Caldecote produced a wide range of artefacts relating to all facets of life in the village. On site, artefacts were catalogued using a single numerical sequence. There were some inconsistencies, mainly in numbering iron objects. Excavations at Caldecote recovered two strap ends, one of which is of medieval date. The other, from a Period four context is of late post-medieval date. A single decorative boss was found, in a post-medieval context. Similar items were typically used as decoration on clothing or leather items, such as harness. Buckles are the most common personal items found at Caldecote, as at other contemporary village excavations. Nine buttons were found during the excavations, seven of copper alloy and two of white metal. Excavations at Caldecote recovered five pairs of shears and one pair of scissors, all of iron, and all but one from undated contexts. The excavations produced virtually no vessel glass that can be assigned to the medieval period.
