ABSTRACT

The bone assemblage comprised 1,760 bone fragments and sixteen partial skeletons, some of the latter represented by only a few bones. These latter bones tended to be chalky and their condition suggests that they may be derived from an earlier period of occupation on the site, such as the Roman and Iron Age activity, despite their recovery from features dated to the medieval and post-medieval periods. The assemblage is dominated by the bones of cattle, which comprise between forty one and fifty seven per cent of the main domestic species that were eaten in the different periods. Sheep and pig bones make a much smaller contribution, but horse bones are relatively common. Other animals make a small contribution to the assemblage although chicken, domestic goose and dog occur consistently. Dog bones are the most numerous of the other species found on the site. They occur in most areas, particularly Croft D and the manor, and three partial skeletons are present.
