ABSTRACT

The archaeological investigations in Shapwick village have been divided threefold according to geographical blocks from south to north. These cover the southern and central village, Shapwick Park in the north and the area around Shapwick House. The chapter focuses on 33 excavations undertaken in the southern and central areas of the village between 1994 and 1999. Many of the excavations were not large and were designed to test the survival of below-ground archaeology. The largest areas of excavation in the village during the life of the Project took place to the north and south of the modern Bridewell Lane, more or less in the centre of Shapwick and immediately to the north of the church. The most informative excavations undertaken in the village were conducted north of Bridewell Lane. This plot is the largest open green space in the modern village.
