ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the results of a recent pilot study on historic sports places in Manchester and what sports heritage means to the people of that city. There is a growing demand for information and a recognition that sports heritage is a legitimate subject of study. On the back of the Manchester pilot study, six areas of opportunity or statements of significance can be identified around which we might begin to construct a research framework. The international history, language and organisation of sport bring a truly multicultural dimension to its value. Many of the places where sport happens are valued environmental resources. People value its history as part of a continuing story. The chapter concludes that to achieve a balanced approach to the wide range of values and benefits that flow from sports heritage means more than understanding and respecting the special historical and architectural significances of sports places.
