ABSTRACT

In its second phase, the property at South Witham was transformed from the small nucleus of buildings which appear to have existed on the site in the late 12th century, to a more substantial farming establishment. The new layout included buildings both of domestic and agricultural purpose, clearly separated from each other. The chapel was free-standing in phase 2, positioned in the angle formed by the main and lesser halls. There was immediate access to the chapel from the main hall during phases 2 and 3. Access from the lesser hall during its phase-2 existence, through the doorway at its south-east angle, was less direct. The kitchen and the pantry were built in phase 2. Areas lying between the kitchen and the hall may well have been roofed and the possible existence of a covered way leading to the entrance of the hall can be hypothesised although no specific evidence was found.
