ABSTRACT
In 1909 Jethro Bithell was completing work on a volume of contemporary German poetry in translation, the precursor of similar anthologies in other languages and noteworthy in that it contains some of the first translations into English from Rainer Maria Rilke's work. Bithell planned to include a selection of Mombert's verse and, for this purpose; he had sent Mombert sample translations of some of the poems he wished to include. The postscript, advising Bithell to contact Otto Pick in London for further information, points to Werfel's uncertainty regarding the immediate future. Bithell's contact with German authors such as Carossa began during the course of the compilation of his study: Modern German Literature and his Anthology of German Poetry, 1880-1940. Carossa's letter of 9 May 1949 clearly demonstrates the personal and professional respect and admiration which were shared by Jethro Bithell and Hans Carossa.
