ABSTRACT

The Female Athlete Triad (Triad) is a syndrome of low energy availability, menstrual disturbances, and poor bone health that occurs in women who do not consume enough food to support the energetic demands of sport and exercise participation. The health consequences of the Triad, such as suboptimal development of peak bone mass, may be irreversible, highlighting the urgency of proper prevention, screening, and treatment strategies for the Triad in exercising women. This chapter describes the physiology and prevalence of each component of the Triad, and evidence-based recommendations for prevention and treatment strategies for each Triad component are outlined.
