ABSTRACT

Due to the ethical constraints of research with those engaging in NSSI behaviors, no one current treatment qualifies as fully empirically supported or well established. However, there are several treatment strategies that show effectiveness and outcomes-based data with individuals who engage in NSSI. In this chapter, several case studies will be conceptualized through the lens of the following theories: eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, family therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Basic interventions for treating NSSI will also be provided aside from the specific theoretical conceptualizations. Diversity factors, developmental stages, and milestones will be considered to provide effective treatment in various clinical settings. Ways to adapt theoretical approaches and interventions to clients throughout the lifespan will also be highlighted in this chapter.
