ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on the discoveries of scholars in the field of hip hop, literature, and linguistics, as well as the works of Indigenous hip hop artists to demonstrate how Indigenous youth are (re)visiting, (re)claiming, and (re)birthing Indigenous languages across Canada. Rooted in Anishinabe scholar Gerald Vizenor’s theory of survivance, which renounces tragedy and victimry and resists dominance, this chapter illuminates ways that community languages, second languages, and translanguaging—the moving across or intermixing of languages and language varieties—may sculpt identities and community knowledge systems during challenging times.
