ABSTRACT

Entering the medium of collage through the use of fabric, however, allowed to let go of preconceived notions. The textures and colors of the fabric reminded of paint. Fabric, like paint, allowed for—and even called for—layering. Created from cloth and leather pieces glued to paper, the work arose from the therapist’s prompt to create a “personal landscape.” The image shows a faceless nude, reclining to the left in the style of so many classic paintings. The magic of therapeutic art making may not differ much from nontherapeutic art making for some artists. As long as a person who is making art from the unconscious is able to interpret and glean insight, then the setting might not matter. The scene juxtaposes the harsh technology of modern-day surgical techniques with the repose of the classic nude, illustrating discomfort with the medical intervention in feminine self-image.
