ABSTRACT
Compact cities are often considered to be more densely built and less environmentally intrusive. The conventional method evaluating compactness does not include dimensions that concern urban open space. This chapter creates an expanded measure based on both the arrangements of urban built space and open space. The results are developed into a composite score guideline for assessing whether cities are sufficiently balanced in these various attributes that generate compact urban forms.
