Looking Forward
The Contours of Women’s Representation in U.S. Politics
ByVanessa C. Tyson
Pages 11

This chapter provides a contextual analysis regarding political representation by and for women in the United States, with specific attention paid to the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the defeat of Secretary Hillary Clinton. From there, the chapter focuses on two dynamics that directly impact the contours of women’s representation in government. First, utilizing contemporary events and historical knowledge, Tyson identifies social and political cleavages that impede feminist consciousness among women as a collective. Second, suggestions and alternatives for successfully bolstering a greater sense of feminist consciousness are offered.
