ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to define key concepts that relate to the promotion and protection of coach psychological well-being (PWB) and performance. It reviews literature relating to environmental, individual, and interpersonal influences on PWB. The chapter offers directions for future research and practice. It examines the case for PWB as central to coach performance, and key terms that are relevant to research on coach PWB. The chapter highlights some limitations of extant literature that need to be addressed before forging new lines of enquiry. Limited literature exists that explores coaches’ PWB but much can be learned from the occupational and general psychology domains about the environmental, individual, and interpersonal factors that influence PWB and performance. Coping, emotions, and coach-athlete relationships can influence coach PWB and performance and are each interpersonal in nature. In sport, the majority of coping research has focused on how athletes or coaches cope with stressors individually.
