ABSTRACT

The idea for an academic studio on the Bunaken Marine National Park, with landscape architecture students of the National University of Singapore, originated from the author’s private family holidays in the National Park. A look at the world map and the geographic location at the northern tip of North Sulawesi, Indonesia, suggest an initial conjecture of paradisiac conditions and remoteness. In reality, the world’s end is overstrained. Divers and snorkelers are hunting and gathering globetrotters, and they start their journeys from any major airport on the five continents. The putative paradise comprises multiple environmental world records. In the reef system we find the highest number of mangrove species, the highest number of seagrass species, and the highest number of coral species—worldwide.
