Counseling Muslim Couples and Families in the United States
This chapter will discuss the intersection of Islamic concepts, doctrines, and epistemologies with counseling. An overview of Islamic family doctrines and practices in relation to interventions from an Islamic family counseling perspective will be explored. Two sources of Islamic doctrines will be examined: the Muslim Personal Law which guides the Muslim family life and the Usrah concept which provides guidance to what a Muslim ideal family looks like. A case study along with interventions will be implemented to demonstrate the implementation of the interventions specified. The chapter will be an overview of the literature about the subject and will provide the reader with greater understanding of Muslim families and different ways of implementing clinical interventions when working with Muslim couples and families.
