ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on climate change, a key sustainability challenge which relates chiefly to the environment but has widespread and critical implications for social and economic sustainability. It introduces the global challenge of climate change as it relates to business activity, with specific focus on business approaches to greenhouse gas (GHG) management. The chapter considers some risks and opportunities to organisations both of managing and not managing their emissions. It also discusses the key steps for business organisations to identify and measure their GHG emissions, to help them be more efficient in their processes and in some cases lower their production costs. The chapter contributes particularly to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 'Climate Action'. It also relates to SDG 7 'Affordable and Clean Energy' and some aspects of SDG 12 'Responsible Consumption and Production'. Taking positive steps can help organisations to reduce costs, improve staff morale, gain recognition for sustainable leadership and protect the Earth for future generations.
