ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how systems thinking can contribute to understanding, communicating and addressing sustainability issues in management. It introduces the notion of systems (holistic) thinking in relation to other ways of thinking such as reductionism and discusses the notion of system as a creation of the observer, i.e. as a personal and social construct rather than an as objective entity that exists 'out there' and yet to be discovered. The chapter discusses the notion of 'long-lasting products' as a particular application of systems thinking in management. It also introduces the main types of diagram commonly used in systems thinking and practice and appreciates how diagrams (including system diagrams) could contribute to thinking and acting in relation to managerial problems that have a dimension of sustainability. The chapter provides an overview of the importance of adopting a 'systems thinking' mindset to address managerial and social situations in relation to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
