ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the impact that the discipline of philosophy, specifically ethics and morality, can have on the study of sport management and what it means for the sport manager. It shows that focusing on the philosophy of ethics and morality in sport, so that sport managers integrate ethical decision making and moral responsibility in their jobs, will help them become ethical sport leaders who choose to do what is right, perhaps even over winning. As a practice, sport management is laden with philosophical questions related to the definitions of sport and competition; the value of sport in society; and the concepts of fair play, cheating, sportsmanship, and ethical decision making. The chapter suggests that the positive and moral values of sport are worth pursuing. The development of good character can be a derivative of competitive sport, and the balance between the bottom line and ethical behavior can indeed occur in the sport setting.
