ABSTRACT

Nicolas outlined a project undertaken at the Universite de Sherbrooke involving doctoral students from engineering, science, medicine, and health sciences that promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and skill development in hopes of better preparing students for a variety of careers. Critics of doctoral preparation also state that there is too much pressure on doctoral students to perform—to publish and secure grants in order to be competitive for new faculty positions in institutions of higher learning. Mitchell convincingly addressed this point in his Lifetime Achievement Award speech at the 2010 Academy of Management conference. He provocatively stated that doctoral students are often inadequately prepared for careers in higher education. Doctoral students want to reach beyond the confines of their disciplines and understand, at least in hindsight, the value of curricular breadth". Mintzberg and other leading theoreticians continue to ask some pointed questions of their field that, upon reflection, have significant relevance to the field of sport management.
