ABSTRACT

Publish or perish has become prevalent throughout higher academia, including sport management. The impact of publish or perish in terms of the application of research to the practitioner, the influence of journal reviews, and issues in performance measures of research publications. This chapter describes paradigm shifts that may affect sport management researchers who are involved with the publish-or-perish environment as they "all play the game, academe". Monstersky states that the phrase publish or perish may better be reworded as publish in a high-impact journal or perish. Even though teaching and service may be considered, the primary determinant at most universities for attaining promotion and tenure is ultimately research publication. The growth of performance measurement practices, such as impact factors and journal rankings, has encouraged the establishment of research objectives related to the number of hits in well-regarded journals. Performance measurement implies that a socially produced and shared classification system divides academic researchers into certain pecking orders.
