ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses what is known about parents of gifted children. It focuses on questions regarding approaches to parenting that are effective in promoting the success of gifted children and how the home environment can help inform teachers' approaches to identification, differentiation, programming models, and counseling options. The majority of parents of gifted children seek and approve of gifted programming and services on the whole; they would rather accept limited or flawed services than no services at all. Parental involvement is defined as "parents' behaviour at home and in school settings meant to support their children's educational progress". Homeschooling provides parents curricular flexibility to respond almost immediately to their child's educational needs, which is often not possible in schools. However, research to support the academic efficacy of homeschooling for gifted students has yet to be established. The importance of parents' engagement in the development of their child's gifts and talents cannot be understated.
