ABSTRACT
Imagine yourself in Istanbul, a city included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List. As you jog along the Bosphorus every day with your iPod and headset on, describe this experience to your friends. Although you will probably talk only about the vision of the Palace of Topkapi in the background, with an underlying choppy sea, of seagulls in the sky, of fishermen on the quay, and of ships traversing the strait, your friends will enjoy this experience, combining in their imagination vision and sound of the described scenario: the splash of the sea on the quay, the seagull’s call, the voices of the fishermen, and the rumble of the ships’ engines (Figure 9.1).
