ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the bullying situation in the United Kingdom and Ireland in the hope that it might stimulate greater awareness and interest and lead to the initiation of further research. It discusses the reported incidence of bullying and examines the personal and background characteristics of both bullies and victims will be detailed and finally some of the approaches to prevention and treatment. K. Reid noted a relationship between truancy and bullying in schools. Bullying tended to be more prevalent in the larger schools and in schools which had larger classes although the differences were not statistically significant. Bullying in Dublin schools did not appear to be linked to 'disadvantaged children' as tended to be the case in P. Stephenson and D. Smith's study. In contrast to many other European countries, schools both in Great Britain and Ireland are very varied.
