WWE’s corporate documentary

Convergence, collective memory, and the case against Warrior
WithChristopher A. Medjesky

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) attempts to shape history via their corporate documentaries by using varying forms of convergence. This convergence blends documentary with messages more often seen in advertising or public relations. Tied into this convergence of production is a convergence of history that weaves a new paratext into the legacy of WWE Superstars. Such exploitation of the documentary form creates risks for the WWE, as creating an official narrative disrupts the fanbase’s historical perceptions and sets a precedent to transform the documentary into a tool for corporate rhetoric and public relations.
