ABSTRACT

Paired Reading 'projects' have shown positive results with populations of all levels of socio-economic status over periods as short as four weeks and as long as twelve months, with the most usual initial period being eight weeks. Paired Reading is a straightforward and enjoyable way for non-professionals to help children develop better reading skills. The method is adaptable to any reading material, and children select books which are of intrinsic interest to them. The very poor recall performance of boys as compared to girls on a silent reading task, in contrast with their equal recall performance after listening to and after orally reading a message, is a related finding indicating a sex differential. Paired Reading at home lies down perfectly happily with a school reading curriculum based on look-and-say, phonics, language experience, pictograms, precision teaching, direct instruction or any other kind of approach.
