ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the five categories of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Value STEPSTM Framework and their relationship to digital technologies in healthcare. The frameworks are: Satisfaction, Treatment/Clinical care, Electronic Secure Data and information, Patient Engagement and Population Management, and Savings. It articulates the inter-relationships between the five categories in the HIMSS Value STEPSTM Framework. The chapter applies the STEPSTM 5-domain Framework to assess the value(s) derived from an electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare digital technologies. The STEPSTM Framework was developed in response to the challenges the Meaningful Use (MU) program posed for United States (US) hospitals and providers. The HIMSS Value STEPSTM Framework was designed to be a useful tool to help inform organizations and individuals in meeting a variety of needs. It provides an easily understood vocabulary for stakeholders to leverage when formulating strategies related to operating in a value-based business model.
