ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how there is a new archaeology of machines, in the sense that there is a historical lineage of machines that have enabled State interventions in the human body. It establishes the nature of the relationship between the State and the individual regarding machinic intervention. The chapter focuses on the use of surveillance mechanisms and what these imply about the machinic future of the State and the individual. It considers the possible future direction of machines and the rise of the machinic homo-legalis, focusing on where current cutting-edge technologies are developing. The chapter also consider what the response should be from the State, if indeed the State will still exist following such machinic change. The rise of surveillance techniques using digital machines was a natural evolution of the combination of traditional surveillance methods and the rise of the Internet.
