ABSTRACT

Ruth Catlow and Marc Garrett discuss some of the motives and philosophies behind Furtherfield’s development of Do It With Others (DIWO), along with a critique of proprietorial dominance over art practice. They traces DIWO’s connections with Do It Yourself culture: art culture, networked and new media art, hacktivism and politics. Then they present Furtherfield’s approaches to critical engagement with the blockchain: smart contracts and cryptocurrencies, ongoing exhibitions, labs, debates to explore how arts-led experimentation with organisational forms and governance might use DAOs to realise DAOWO, as an experimental space for emancipatory, collaborative, networked art practice.
