ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to connect the importance of understanding society beyond a simplistic lens, raising consciousness to the inclusion of diversity and difference to dominant discourses. As social work is manifested in various ways, including individual and family work, group and community work, it is also important to see how various approaches across the profession can enhance the development of social consciousness, leading to the possible transformation of worldviews. Social work should then see the value of employing innovative measures to engage people more genuinely, and not see such visual practices and imagery as only reserved for screen, film, and television practitioners. As a profession committed to social action and social change, the notion that visual practices and imagery can be used to elicit a movement should be common sense. The chapter outlines and exemplifies the impact that visual communication has on individuals, their place in community, and the wider society.
