ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses and reviews on Xanthomonas citri causing economic losses in India and many other countries by producing poor quality fruits and reduction in yield; management practices for controlling canker diseases; and thus improving quality and production of citrus species. Different pathovars of Xanthomonas citri have been reported to cause citrus canker disease. Citrus canker has been reported to cause devastation in all the major citrus growing countries of the world causing extensive damage to citrus plantation. All the aerial parts of the plant are susceptible to the bacterium during the initial tender growth stage. The weather factors play a pivotal role in the spread of the disease. The bacterium is dispersed with the help of rainwater which run over the surfaces of lesions and then splashing on the disease free plant parts. Citrus leaf miner is very important for the dissemination of the disease and they carry bacteria on their body.
