ABSTRACT

380Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent cancer and among the current trends of treatments which include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery and so forth. Such treatments are associated with high risk of complication with no guaranty for complete recovery. Currently probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics represent a new therapeutic option. Numerous studies such as in vitro and animal model studies have indicated the potential role of probiotics including Lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, and prebiotics such as oligo-fructose and inulin, to exert anti-neoplastic effects. Probiotic cultures can also serve as live vehicles to deliver biologic agents (vaccines, enzymes and proteins) to targeted locations within the body. Synbiotics, which is a combination of probiotics and prebiotics, can synergistically in improving CRC. This chapter highlights different preventive action of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics against CRC demonstrating various animals and human case studies.
