ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process of transitioning a family from Phase I to Phase II of FBT, with an emphasis on assisting clinicians in determining when a family is ready. We provide a readiness assessment to help clinicians and supervisors preview the transition before it either happens too quickly, without their full awareness, or is suspended without just cause. Families and clinicians alike can become polarized in their decision making about this process, and thus we hope to provide some guidelines to benchmark progress. Common dilemmas faced by clinicians in moving into Phase II include not knowing how to bolster families when they are burned out and expressing hopelessness about their ability to prevail, as well as not knowing how to structure a gradual, step-by-step transition.
