ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 is written by Mary Tramontin, a forensically trained, licensed clinical psychologist and long-time American Red Cross volunteer. Its subject is the World Trade Center Attack in New York City, 2001. The chapter begins by giving the reader an insight into how Tramontin discovered the world of disaster response and then takes the reader through the full sequence of events from pre- to post-disaster from her perspective. The chapter highlights the collaborative nature, by necessity, of disaster recovery work and praises the formation of “therapeutic alliances” of recovery workers.
