ABSTRACT

Chapter 3, written by J. Christie Rodgers, is a case study of the 2014 mudslide which devastated the area of Oso, Washington, USA in 2014; a portion of unstable hill collapsed which caused a landslide that engulfed four small neighboring communities and killed 43 people. The chapter begins with an introduction to the areas affected by the mudslide, then takes the reader through the experience of the disaster itself. Rodgers shares her thought processes throughout the chapter and gives the reader an insight into the practicalities of responding to a national-level disaster with limited resources; further, we get an insight into how responding to the disaster affected her personally, and how she dealt with that.
