Planning for change
The master plan and the Phase I construction for the Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona was completed by the architecture firm NBBJ in 2005. Six years later, recognizing the need to expand the facility, the hospital hired the SmithGroup to undertake Phase II, which was completed in 2014. The chapter describes in detail the design principles employed by NBBJ in setting up the campus for growth and preparing the building for change. It then continues to discuss in detail the design decision-making in the “hand-off” for Phase II to the SmithGroup, bringing to light issues in communication, changing regulations and demographics and client requirements that arise in a multiphase project planned for change, in which different architects undertake the different phases.
