ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the client with alcohol use disorder. David Murray is a 37-year-old man who was referred by his local General Medical Practitioner (GP) for psychological assessment and treatment following an incident of domestic violence against his wife. From clinical presentation, it is considered diagnostically that David has a dual diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). During the interview it became apparent that the approximate date of onset between David's PTSD and alcohol dependence were associated. In order to adequately treat the PTSD David was offered trauma-focused cognitive behavioural interventions or eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy. It is very important to conduct risk assessments with veterans as they have a higher than average rate of suicide. Fortunately, David has a supportive wife even though she had had enough of his behaviour.
