ABSTRACT

For any group experiencing discrimination, allies are essential. These individuals can promote awareness of inequities, provide invaluable resources to help members of persecuted groups, spur change within organizations, and be good friends. Allies also want to be helpful, and they desire information about and insights on: a) the issues faced by groups experiencing discrimination; b) ways to be helpful; and c) strategies to produce positive changes. Thus, trainings that promote learning about these elements are critical. This chapter examines the importance of allies and also reviews one such training—the Ally Training for Social Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion that took place at the 2018 annual conference of the American Society for Public Administration.
