ABSTRACT
Some 60 million ha of uncultivated land in the northern part of Nigeria can potentially be used for grazing and livestock production (de Leeuw, 1974). These lands carry a savannah vegetation, consisting of an upper stratum of trees and shrubs of variable density and a herbaceous cover mainly of grasses.
