ABSTRACT

2 The Fair Jilt, or, The History of Prince Tarquin and Miranda was first published separately in 1688 and was the first of Behn’s novels to include her name on the title page. Later in the same year it was reissued as the second work bound in The Three Histories with Oroonoko and Agnes de Castro. The first publication in 1688, licensed on 17 April, carried two advertisements, the first stating that ’There is now in the Press, Oroonoko; or, The History of the Royal Slave Written by Madam Behn’, so implying that The Fair Jilt preceded Oroonoko. The other advertisement was for face powder. Although the title page gives the name of the story as The Fair Jilt: or, the History of Prince Tarquin and Miranda, the narrative itself begins with the title The Fair Hypocrite: or the Amours of Prince Tarquin and Miranda.
