ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning using the parameters of Music, Civic Responsibility, and Music Education, in which students integrate all three areas to produce lesson plans which are taught in actual classrooms. It assesses the successes and challenges in each implementation, and describes which process yielded the best results. The course content is essentially that of a music education pedagogy class, requiring students to learn theoretical concepts such as the CORE standards in music, children's cognitive and emotional musical development, assessment and observation techniques, practical teaching strategies, and lesson planning. Problem-Based Learning is seen as an alternative and progressive learning strategy that goes hand in hand with other models such as the Flipped Classroom, Blended Learning, and Teacher-led Project work. Students were assessed based on several dimensions, such as self-reflection, peer assessment, assignment completion including the lesson plan, and final outcome of the presentation.
