ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Problem-Based Learning approach as "purposeful open-endedness". It discusses the process of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as mirroring the processes of cooperation found in many African communities. The chapter provides a description of what it would do differently when it re-implements the PBL. Student contributions to their group websites reflected a wide range of assignment completeness and accuracy. Each group collaboratively determined what types of musical examples to include on their website, with the goal to reflect the ethnic diversity of their country or countries, and also represent traditional styles, current popular music, and the national anthem of each country. Almost every student mentioned the ethnic diversity in Africa and its manifestation in musical creation and use as being an important part of what they learned. Modern-day Africa presents a host of what Savery calls "ill-structured problems," which he considers a requirement for true PBL.
