ABSTRACT

Reading case studies about quality circles of the kind presented by Robson gave the idea that the management of A Level Theatre Studies and GCSE Drama in school could benefit from some parallel thinking to that which frequently occurs in industry. The Theatre Studies quality circles have informally and creatively studied immediate problems concerned with the production of a single play. The experience of industry shows that quality circles form, grow, have their day and die. Firms that are traditionally hostile to the work force have great difficulty in establishing a quality circle. A company that has a tradition of nurturing employees' talent is more likely to succeed in establishing a quality circle that produces solutions of universal benefit. Quality circle diagrams, continually redrawn, were useful for focusing our attention on the diversity of people who are involved in putting on the school's autumn production and the final practical examinations.
