ABSTRACT

The advent of writings in English from the northeast of India has garnered a wide attention with an interest in what could embody this body of literature. In the eyes of many, the region is projected as a homogenous one, which also exemplifies the misunderstanding of the region inhabited by people with different cultures. This chapter tries to project how these writers shoulder a sense of social responsibility by writing on themes which closely connect with the people and their cultures. Given the long history of unrest, a major theme revolves around how common people negotiate their lives in uncertain times. Also, the rich history of oral tradition among many diverse communities becomes a wellspring for creative expressions. Exploring the writings from the region will help us understand the history, culture and traditions of the people.
