ABSTRACT
This chapter explores why collaboration is a common theme underpinning success. New business models, governance structures, planning systems, enabling legislation and unexpected collaborations are beginning to deliver a glimpse of what the future could look like if these ideas were embraced by the mainstream. An integral part of our mission at Eden is to push the boundaries on sustainable practice in all areas of business, creating opportunities that go beyond expectations and demonstrating just what might be possible through collaboration with a wide range of partners. The collaboration was so successful that when McAlpine bid for a contract to build a new retail development in St Austell, called White River Place, they seconded Eden's sustainable construction manager to the project. The team that had collaborated so successfully to build the Core at Eden had, in effect, been reconvened, which meant there was a shared knowledge and understanding of the ambitions for White River Place.
