ABSTRACT

In general, pressure on lead times was less of an issue in Sri Lanka because suppliers produced core basic items with relatively long shelf-lives and simple construction, rather than fast fashion garments. Sri Lanka was selected for the study as it is a key global garment sourcing location and has a reputation for high levels of social responsibility and compliance with norms of ethical sourcing. The 'Garments Without Guilt' campaign was launched by the national garment and textile industry body, in 2006. In addition, corporate social responsibility (CSR) was understood by factory management as a key contributor to sustainable business development in a labour-intensive industry sector: Most of the businesses especially in apparel they are looking for a sustainable business. The benefits of strategic CSR provide a clear justification for CSR implementation in globally dispersed fashion supply chains, in terms of risk reduction and protection of brand image as well as in terms of ensuring supplier business sustainability.
