ABSTRACT

Motorised road transport is of great importance for industrialised societies, both for the transport of goods and people. In Sweden, transport is one of the main fossil-fuel-consuming sectors, as electricity production and heating are almost fossil-fuel-free. The environmental transport goal for the district was that, in 2005, 80% of travel to and from work would be by public transport, bicycle or on foot. The main goal for major industries in Europe is to support the development of hydrogen for transport. The development of ethanol as a bio fuel has been driven very much by agricultural lobby groups. The Swedish government's ambitious vision for becoming a fossil-fuel-free country are an important step in creating consensus on a long-term strategy for a sustainable transport system that creates a compromise between various articulations of sustainability.
